Subject: Great Balls O' Fire!!
Based on the long-running comic strip (1919 - 2001). Perennial moonshiner Snuffy, pursued by revenuers, joins the army for a new pair of kaki pants and tobacco money. Of course, all hell breaks loose. Adding to the nuttiness are Nazi spies and an invisible dog. I didn't expect to like this one, but within a few minutes I was laughing in spite of myself. The diminutive Bud Duncan is a lot of fun as Snuffy, and Sarah Padden is great as his over-sized wife, Lowizi. First as a revenuer, then as a master sergeant, Edgar "slow burn" Kennedy is Snuffy's foil. A ridiculous plot, over-the-top hillbilly caricatures and slapstick - what more could you ask for?

I made my two nephews, raised on slasher movies, watch this. I caught them laughing several times. After the movie, they both told me how lame this was but asked me the next time they visited if they could watch more like it.

Subject: Sarah Padden sparkles as Loweezie
A great movie? Nah, but I do love it. It's funny enough (about as funny as the comic strip) and the characters are mostly thin, as you'd expect. But then there's Padden's Loweezie. She has depth and poignancy and she's hilarious. The rest of the movie is okay, but she is a joy to watch and listen to.

It's not that good of a movie but somehow it's appealing and kind of sweet.
It must of been a big flop at the box office though.
